Remove lint and pet hairs with a lint roller or wrap your hand with tape, sticky side out, for a clean look. Pills (those little bumps right above the smooth weave) are removed with a pumice stone, scissors or simply shave them off with a disposable razor. Before pulling on your sweater, wait for deodorant to dry or it can build up and create a stain. Don’t wear the same garment more than once a week. Remove wrinkles by ironing on low, inside out. And please, clean your cashmere before storing (folded in tissue) to avoid moth damage.

Fall’s the perfect time for a fleece sweater, jacket or cozy throw. Because most fleece is made of polyester, its usually washable in a home machine, inside-out and using the gentle cycle. A mild powered detergent like Ivory Snow, will clean without affecting fleece’s water resistance. Never add fabric softener or bleach, always dry at the lowest setting or better yet, hang to air dry.

Before you store away your summer favorites, make sure everything’s clean and free of spills and stains. That little white wine spot or soda spill can oxidize over time, leaving a brown stain. Pack like-colored items together and keep everything away from light and moisture. If you don’t have closet hanger space, fold everything with white tissue paper and pack loosely in suitcases or place in breathable containers, like fabric garment bags.

After summer’s hot nights, now’s a good time to freshen your nighttime environment. Begin by stripping the bed down to the mattress. If you use a mattress pad, launder (or bring to us) and dry thoroughly, hanging on the line, if you have one. Flip and rotate the mattress. Is it time to replace your pillows? Unless they are very high quality, it may be easier to buy new than clean old. Sniff test the winter comforter, blankets or quilts. We can clean them to like-new freshness – even king size is no problem for our machines. Be ready to snuggle up before winter chills arrive.

Here’s a new red wine stain removal trick from the Food Network. Flush the stain with white wine to remove as much stain as you can, blotting between rinses. Follow with distilled white vinegar rinses to get the last of the red out. Then launder as usual. Or promptly bring the stained garment to us, for expert stain removal and cleaning.
