Laundry pros take sorting to a new level when they recommend sorting not only by color but also by fabric type. We always separate linty laundry like towels and sweatshirts from corduroys, permanent press and smooth fabrics that can pill. Separate loads for pure whites, lights and patterns on white, darks, brights and delicates lets you fine tune temperature and product choice. If that all sounds impossible, remember we do it every day to deliver the cleanest, brightest and longest-wearing garments and household linens

Save energy doing laundry.

Consumer Reports says we use around 70 billion kilowatt hours doing laundry at home. To save on your costs, start by using cold water when you can. Increase the spin cycle to remove more water and reduce drying time. Clean the lint filter and dryer duct to keep air moving. If you still use dryer sheets, know that they can reduce air flow. Use the dryer’s automatic cycle instead of the timer. Or simply hang everything on the line for free drying.

Donate or sell to make room on the hanger for what’s new. Get rid of overly fitted pieces. Keep well-tailored and loose fits. Gone are those strappy sandals and dad sneakers. Lose the impractical/uncomfortable heels and clumsy extra-large totes, not to mention seriously those no-no-more fanny packs. New trends include one-shoulder tops, mini-skirts (!), neon knits, flat boots and purple. Stay ahead by getting rid of what’s behind. You’ll gain closet space and a few admiring looks as well.

Inspect jackets and coats for damage, tears or stains before hanging on a well-padded hanger for storage. Use leather conditioner on dry spots like elbows and seams. Frequently worn items should be professionally cleaned every year to maintain the leather, preserve the color and prevent permanent staining.

A few simple steps can save a trip and add at least one more wear to your nicest clothes. After wearing, hang the garment on a sturdy wooden hanger, remove pocket contents, belts or accessories, then give jackets, skirts or pants a thorough brushing to remove lint, dust and surface grime. Ease out wrinkles with a steamer or a hang near the shower and air overnight before storing.

Create more space by eliminating any garment that is: (1) truly stained or stinky. We can do a lot, but some stains and smells are forever. (2) Damaged beyond repair, even by a talented seamstress. (3) Would you buy it right now? (4) It does not fit. Not now, probably never. (5). Wrong look, wrong image. (6). Brings up bad memories. (7) It outlasted a trend. (8) Have yet to wear it. (9) It is worn out, stretched, faded or pilled. Donate or recycle the mistakes and make room for more room.

Ferns not your style? A trend towards industrial rustic sees couples wedding in raw and techy spaces, dressed up with greenery and rich florals contrasting against the warehouse, loft or reclaimed factory setting. The must-have color this season is Living Coral, a warm pink with gold undertones. Use coral accents to brighten cakes, flowers or bridesmaid’s dresses. Speaking of bridesmaids, today’s couples are including their nearest and dearest in the celebration, unencumbered by traditional gendered roles. Look for bridesmen, groomsgirls and best women as convention becomes a guideline rather than a rule.
